But this cruise is all about St Petersburg, and you will return to your luxurious ship in preparation for your your arrival in the great Russian port, for three full days’ exploration, the highlight of your cruise.

The sights are amazing, from what lies beneath the golden dome of St Isaac’s Cathedral which dominates the city skyline, to the unrivalled bounty of The Hermitage, the ‘Winter Palace’, and Peter the Great’s extravagant Grand Palace, the ‘Summer Palace’, and to see such priceless wonders of the world as Catherine The Great’s Amber Room.
These treasures fully live up to their reputation. You can be absorbed by The Hermitage for days and still come out wanting more. The enormous collection (over three million items, only a fraction of which are on display in 360 rooms) almost amounts to a comprehensive history of Western European art.
The golden dome of St Isaac’s Cathedral dominates the St Petersburg skyline. You can visit its lavish interior, see a service in the cathedral, climb the 262 steps to the colonnade around the drum of the dome, providing superb city views. More than 100kg of gold leaf was used to cover this 21.8m-high dome alone.
Relive the luxury of the 18th-century Imperial Russian court on an evening visit to the lavish Catherine Palace. See the Romanovs’ portraits and private rooms before entering the Golden Suite of Rooms to view the world famous Amber Room, once considered the Eighth Wonder of the World. In the Grand Hall, drink Russian wine to the strains of classical music, an evocation of the glory days when Catherine II glided among her guests.
The pageantry continues with a parade of The Imperial Guards, then it’s on to the Imperial Carriage Museum—and traditional Russian dinner accompanied by live music. This magical evening ends with your own ‘carriages’, whisking you back to Explorer to continue the night in style.
There is more, much more: intimate guided insights to the highlights of the city, a visit to The Hermitage with access to the Gold Room; a sparkling evening of Russian ballet, perhaps a performance of Swan Lake at the Mikhailovsky; a classical orchestral concert at the luxurious Menshikov Palace on the Neva River; and an evening of Russian song and dance; jewellery, art and antiques viewing including a visit to the Faberge Museum, and an insight into making the traditional Matryoshka ‘nesting dolls’. History is all around, and one visit focuses on this ‘cradle of the Revolution’ with its dark secrets, plots and assassinations.
And because this is high summer and the sun hardly sets, there’s wonderful outdoor events, canal cruising and city-wide shopping. Food lovers won’t want to miss the chef’s tour of the city, punctuated with caviar and vodka—and of course back on board Explorer there is more fine caviar and Champagne! You can even take the train to Moscow for the day if you wish. All in all, it will be a fabulous way to enjoy St Petersburg to its fullest extent, and by day three, as you sail away from this fabulous Russian city in the still-light evening towards Finland’s Helsinki you will have memories to treasure and your cruise is still not over—Scandinavia awaits.
Helsinki gives you a different take on life: in summer, the capital of Finland blossoms. This is a city on the crest of a newfound confidence, enjoying the afterglow of its reign as World Design Capital and proud centre of one of Europe’s most prosperous countries. It’s a city in touch with Nature, filled with parks and gardens, and in July you’ll join the locals on Nordic walking trips, foraging for the best of Finnish cuisine, and visits to the sauna. You can cruise for the maritime highlights, or explore this fine city on foot. From the quirky couture of Marimekko to the modernist masterpieces of Alvar Aalto, design is part of the city’s DNA.
Next morning, it is Stockholm, and time to disembark. Either fly back to the UK or add a night or two in the Swedish capital. As with so much about Regent Seven Seas Cruises, the choices are great, the style is relaxed, with freedom to be yourself.
