These cruises give you the pleasures of the world in comfort and safety, with none of the hardships of attempting to reach multiple destinations by other means. So what about cruising the Baltic to St Petersburg this July, in your private suite with its own balcony aboard what is officially the world’s most luxurious cruise ship?
We chose Regent’s seven-night ‘Beauty of Baroque’ for all of the above benefits—and for our exceptional Club rates. The beautiful and historic multiple ports of call give chance to see, in a single trip, everything from the treasures of St Petersburg and Berlin to historic Riga in Latvia, known as the ‘Paris of the Baltics’, historic, picture-perfect Tallin in Estonia, and thence to the Gulf of Finland for vibrant Helsinki and Stockholm—and giving you up to 32 free port excursions along the way so that you can really absorb these cultures and delights.
The seven-night itinerary begins on Jul 22, embarking at Copenhagen, Denmark: Jul 23, Berlin (Warnemunde), Germany; Jul 24, Cruising the Baltic Sea; Jul 25, Tallinn, Estonia; Jul 26 and 27, St Petersburg, Russia; Jul 28, Helsinki, Finland; Jul 29, Stockholm, Sweden. With just a single full day at sea, the 32 port excursions really come into their own. At each port of call you can partake in as many shore excursions as you wish—and have energy for!—among the variety of visits and events, historic insights, entertainment, wine and food tastings, dining, dancing and discovery.
Your first port of call will be Berlin, via Warnemunde. Regent’s free excursions give you opportunities for a wealth of pleasures—and poignant memories. The Brandenburg Gate, the Holocaust Memorial, the remnants of the Berlin Wall and Checkpoint Charlie, for examples. You can cruise the River Spree, see the Reichstag and the Charlottenburg Palace, or enjoy the Prussian Royal Family’s Sanssouci Palace or the flavours of Rostock, before re-boarding luxurious Explorer.
With a day at sea there is time to relax and enjoy your ship—itself one of the wonders of the seven seas. Wine and dine in style, enjoy the art, the casino, the spa, the sports, the shows, and of course the pleasures of a relaxing day in your own private suite and on your balcony, taking the sunshine and sea air. And then, early next morning, you will awake to see picture-perfect Tallin, the capital and main seaport of Estonia.
Though the city has been bombed and pillaged many times throughout the ages, much of the town is as it was in Mediaeval times. Atmospheric streets serve as home to palaces. Ancient convents, steepled churches and handsome guild houses are all preserved as they were in Tallinn’s Old Town area, named a Unesco World Heritage Site. But this cruise is all about St Petersburg, and you will return to your luxurious ship in preparation for your your arrival in the great Russian port, for three full days’ exploration, the highlight of your cruise.
We are thrilled that this cruise enables you to enjoy amazing days in the historic city of St Petersburg, emblem of Russia’s rich culture in Tzarist times. This is a gilded dream city, filled with history, royalty, culture, the arts and entertainment.
The sheer grandeur and history of Russia’s Imperial capital never fail to amaze. And all the spectacular visions of St Petersburg will be at your feet to explore—no worries about visas, planning, guides or personal safety—everything is taken care of. You will be whisked to the finest jewels in the St Petersburg crown, with time and space to linger as you wish. The sights are amazing, from what lies beneath the golden dome of St Isaac’s Cathedral which dominates the city skyline, to the unrivalled bounty of The Hermitage, the ‘Winter Palace’, and Peter the Great’s extravagant Grand Palace, the ‘Summer Palace’, and to see such priceless wonders of the world as Catherine The Great’s Amber Room.
These treasures fully live up to their reputation. You can be absorbed by The Hermitage for days and still come out wanting more. The enormous collection (over three million items, only a fraction of which are on display in 360 rooms) almost amounts to a comprehensive history of Western European art.
The golden dome of St Isaac’s Cathedral dominates the St Petersburg skyline. You can visit its lavish interior, see a service in the cathedral, climb the 262 steps to the colonnade around the drum of the dome, providing superb city views. More than 100kg of gold leaf was used to cover this 21.8m-high dome alone.
Relive the luxury of the 18th-century Imperial Russian court on an evening visit to the lavish Catherine Palace. See the Romanovs’ portraits and private rooms before entering the Golden Suite of Rooms to view the world famous Amber Room, once considered the Eighth Wonder of the World. In the Grand Hall, drink Russian wine to the strains of classical music, an evocation of the glory days when Catherine II glided among her guests.
The pageantry continues with a parade of The Imperial Guards, then it’s on to the Imperial Carriage Museum—and traditional Russian dinner accompanied by live music. This magical evening ends with your own ‘carriages’, whisking you back to Explorer to continue the night in style.
There is more, much more: intimate guided insights to the highlights of the city, a visit to The Hermitage with access to the Gold Room; a sparkling evening of Russian ballet, perhaps a performance of Swan Lake at the Mikhailovsky; a classical orchestral concert at the luxurious Menshikov Palace on the Neva River; and an evening of Russian song and dance; jewellery, art and antiques viewing including a visit to the Faberge Museum, and an insight into making the traditional Matryoshka ‘nesting dolls’. History is all around, and one visit focuses on this ‘cradle of the Revolution’ with its dark secrets, plots and assassinations.
And because this is high summer and the sun hardly sets, there’s wonderful outdoor events, canal cruising and city-wide shopping. Food lovers won’t want to miss the chef’s tour of the city, punctuated with caviar and vodka—and of course back on board Explorer there is more fine caviar and Champagne! You can even take the train to Moscow for the day if you wish. All in all, it will be a fabulous way to enjoy St Petersburg to its fullest extent, and by day three, as you sail away from this fabulous Russian city in the still-light evening towards Finland’s Helsinki you will have memories to treasure and your cruise is still not over—Scandinavia awaits.
Helsinki gives you a different take on life: in summer, the capital of Finland blossoms. This is a city on the crest of a newfound confidence, enjoying the afterglow of its reign as World Design Capital and proud centre of one of Europe’s most prosperous countries. It’s a city in touch with Nature, filled with parks and gardens, and in July you’ll join the locals on Nordic walking trips, foraging for the best of Finnish cuisine, and visits to the sauna. You can cruise for the maritime highlights, or explore this fine city on foot. From the quirky couture of Marimekko to the modernist masterpieces of Alvar Aalto, design is part of the city’s DNA.
Next morning, it is Stockholm, and time to disembark. Either fly back to the UK or add a night or two in the Swedish capital. As with so much about Regent Seven Seas Cruises, the choices are great, the style is relaxed, with freedom to be yourself.
So if it is your pleasure to enjoy a glass of chilled Champagne with canapés on your private balcony in the long summer evenings, taking in yet another beautiful seascape, consider it done: a bottle will arrive, on ice, at the appropriate moment. Whole Maine lobster and Alaskan king crabs? Fresh truffles and foie gras? Caviar with your scrambled eggs? All are yours for the ordering—and for Sunday brunch the caviar and Champagne bar awaits. Private dinner for two in your suite? Certainly: any time of the day or night. Roulette? The casino is open for play. Whisky and cigar? Time to visit the Connoisseur Club. Golf? Bocce? Tennis? Cabaret? A good book or film? Swimming? Sunbathing, iced cocktail to hand?
All are at your disposal—and there is no need to worry about carrying a wallet on board ship; it is all taken care of. Fares include all drinks, meals and speciality restaurants, excellent wines and premium spirits; return flights and transfers; unlimited shore excursions (which with other cruise lines can really add to the costs); all onboard activities including guest lectures, fitness programmes and entertainment; 24-hour room service and in-suite dining; free Wifi, films and music; and all gratuities. On some of the cruises there are free three-night land programmes and pre-cruise hotel stays. And European return flights are Business Class for the higher suites—again, all included.
For the savvy traveller the inclusive price of all these often makes a Regent Seven Seas cruise work out more advantageous than cruises where you have to pay for everything separately. As you can tell, these are important benefits—particularly with these seriously good Club savings. You are warmly invited to enjoy!
