A feast of sport and heritage: Polo at Hurlingham

Polo

Polo has returned to its prestigious home at Hurlingham in London for a sporting and social occasion to rival any in the English Social Calendar—and our Members are invited to be there as VIP guests on Saturday, June 5. Members of the Royal Family are expected to be among the 5,000 spectators.

One of Britain’s greatest private members’ clubs (it has a 15-year waiting list), Hurlingham retains its quintessentially English traditions, and our Members will be entertained in its famous East Wing. The feasting will start with breakfast from Harrods, moving on to a Veuve Clicquot Champagne reception with canapés at the Hurlingham Club, a two-course gourmet lunch with wines, and afternoon tea, also from Harrods.

HurlinghamMeanwhile the polo itself will be blisteringly fast and high-octane, and you will have all-day reserved grandstand seats to watch the six teams (London, Paris, New York, Sydney, Buenos Aires and Mumbai) fight it out. There will be three full matches on a day which starts at 10am and ends at 8pm. The full price is £265 per person plus VAT; our Members will pay £239 plus VAT. To reserve your places (numbers are limited), please call Member Services on 020 7935 0888 or click here.

Design and romance: stylish new beach retreat

Martinhal

Hotel Martinhal is a new five-star contemporary designer hotel on Martinhal Beach in Portugal—so new that it opened only this week. Our Members have a special deal to sample this luxury resort, staying in a wood-clad Beach Room with private balcony, and breathtaking sea views.

Martinhal is a south-facing resort, and very contemporary in design (it was designed by a London architect). It lies in the Costa Vicentina Natural Park, at the most south-westerly point of Portugal—believed to be where Sir Francis Drake landed to attack the fortress of St Vincent. Its position means it is milder than the Algarve in winter, cooler in summer.

Martinhal suiteThere is no limit to the activities at Martinhal; it has five swimming pools, from a special for toddlers to a 20m pool for serious swimmers. The resort has a gym, saunas, spa and steam rooms to help you relax. As to sport, it has three tournament tennis courts plus two glass-sided family courts, and of course the sea where you can windsurf, kite surf, surf, body board or dive. Martinhal beach is on the doorstep, and another 12 beaches, some deserted, are within a few minutes’ drive … this being Portugal, there is a championship golf course. The resort is about an hour from Faro International Airport.

The first Members to book a Martinhal Beach Room will pay a Blue Ribbon rate of £137 per night for two including breakfast and VAT (RR €395). Offer is subject to availability when booking: to check availability, and to book, call Member Services on 020 7935 0888 or click here.

Lanson ‘Extra Age’: a unique celebratory Champagne

Lanson Extra AgeIf you wish to serve a fine Champagne that will be a talking point this year—and a suitably impressive celebratory drink—the ‘Extra Age Brut by Lanson’ is the answer. It is remarkable, unique in fact. Lanson have never made anything like it before, and may never do so again, as it has been created from the finest Grands Cru classified vineyards to celebrate their 250th anniversary this year.

The Extra Age was created in secret by their winemaker of 39 years, Jean Paul Gandon. He worked for long months to achieve the seemingly impossible, combining the best features of the House to recreate the styles of Champagne that were enjoyed in the 18th century. Nobody else within Lanson knew it was even in progress, let alone a finished Champagne—and our Members not only have access to this limited edition Champagne, but at an especially advantageous price.

Jean Paul Gandon used 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay from the 1999, 2002 and 2003 vintages to create a complex Champagne that is then aged for a further five years or more. The resulting Champagne has honeyed aromas of ripe pear leading to a rich palate that still has an uplifting freshness thanks to Champagne Lanson’s non-malolactic house style. Only 30,000 bottles of the Extra Age were produced.

To call it a collector’s item (as well as a delicious Champagne!) is not putting it too strongly, and although it is difficult to find, we have secured a limited supply for the Club Cellar. It is in its own distinctive 18th-century bottle and has an equally distinctive box.

Case of three bottles, each in a presentation box. Code EA01LA05. RRP £179.97. CCUK £139. Order Lanson 250th Anniversary Extra Age Brut.

Elegant ruby and gold chain necklace, only £98

Ruby necklaceTo wear a ruby necklace is special—and when we first saw this elegant combination of faceted rubies suspended on a gold chain we could not wait to show it to you.

The simple design of more than 60 faceted rubies linked by yellow gold makes a fascinatingly attractive necklace. It looks beautiful against the skin—delicate yet incredibly eye-catching as the faceted rubies catch the light and sparkle. Of course these are not the most precious rubies in the world, or the necklace would cost the family fortune—but it is both elegant and classical, and it certainly looks a million dollars!

This lovely necklace can be worn with any colour or style, traditional or contemporary, from a business suit to a summer dress, cocktail outfit or a simple shirt—and of course it looks gorgeous worn with red, black or white. The 18in gold fill chain is the perfect length to hang elegantly—but if you wish you can order a shorter or longer length—it is finished with an 18ct hallmarked gold clasp, and it is presented in a smart presentation case. A real El Snippo, it makes a stunning gift.

Ruby and gold chain necklace. Code RN01CC04. Non-Members £215. CCUK £98. Order Ruby and Yellow Gold Chain Necklace.

The new Baronet Travel Wallet for high-flyers, £47

Baronet Travel WalletThis new Baronet Travel Wallet is not only handsome but the most practical we have seen—a fitting tribute to the man it was named after, Sir George Cayley Bt, who invented the modern fixed-wing aeroplane more than a century before the Wright brothers (in 1799, to be precise).

Like Sir George, it is intelligent and practical—large enough to carry all your travel documents and money in one place, yet small enough to fit into the breast pocket of a man’s suit or a small travel bag for a lady.

It is designed by English leather expert Shona Easton and beautifully handmade in full grain calf. Soft and satisfying to the touch, it will last forever and improve as you travel. On the right is a main compartment to hold your passport safely, with extra slots for credit cards and a long slip pocket for banknotes and chequebook. On the left are two full-length pockets for airline tickets and boarding pass, with smaller pockets for receipts and a special stamp pocket. Behind this is a full-length zipped compartment for valuables or coins.

The wallet closes securely with a tab and press-stud, so nothing falls out, and is fully lined. It comes with a matching purse for extras during a flight: from glasses to contact lens paraphernalia, pens, make-up etc and makes an excellent everyday wallet whether you are travelling or not.

Baronet Leather Travel Wallet with Purse. Choose from black, dark purple, red and green. Code TW01ED01. RRP £85. CCUK £47. Order Baronet Set.

A luxurious stay in a stately home in Suffolk

Hintlesham Hall

A Grade I listed Elizabethan manor house, Hintlesham Hall stands in 175 acres of rolling Suffolk countryside. It is as much a private stately home as an hotel, and perfect for a relaxing country break. It is, however, every inch a fine hotel, ranked AA 4-star, a Small Luxury Hotel of the World, and with No 1 status in the area.

Hintlesham has all the spacious living rooms you expect in a stately home—drawing room, library, a grand salon for dinner, garden room, pool, gymnasium and large bedrooms, with window seats, open fireplaces, vases of fresh-cut flowers to scent the air, and, surrounding the Hall, a private Park. The 33 bedrooms and suites are decked out with fine fabrics and antiques, and the welcome is equally fine: friendly yet professional, with delicious food to make your stay complete.

Hintlesham is near Ipswich, which is itself a hidden gem among country towns: it is charming, steeped in history, and within a few short miles you can be on the unspoilt Suffolk coast or under the wide skies of Constable Country. Local houses and gardens include Ickworth, Gainsborough’s House, Somerleyton and Kentwell Hall, and The Queen’s Estate at Sandringham is a two-hour drive. Back at the hotel, there are acres of grounds in which to walk, and a championship golf course.

The best rooms are the Large Principal Doubles. These spacious rooms with sitting areas are in the main house and courtyard with garden and courtyard views, king beds and en suite bathrooms, and usually cost from £229 per night. However, the first Members to book will receive a special Blue Ribbon rate of £119 per night for two, including full English breakfast. Offer is subject to availability, of course: to check availability, and to book, click here or call Member Services on 020 7935 0888.

Hand-blown, hand-cut glass vase: pure design, £49

Hand-blown glass vaseAt last it is time to deck the halls with fresh Spring flowers, and this stunning new hand-blown, hand-cut glass tall vase is an inspiration. It is created by a notable name in modern glassmaking, Monika Lubkowska-Jonas at LSA, who experiments with the endless potential of handmade glass—epitomised by this new design, named Fiord.

After mouth-blowing and hand scissor-cutting the rim, the upper part of each piece is re-heated to stretch the glass, then swung around so the hot glass falls in folds. It not only creates an individual and artistic piece of glass which looks beautiful with or without flowers, it makes flower arranging simple: the folds of glass hold the stems at different angles, adding extra artistry to any arrangement.

Interestingly, the vase looks very different depending on the glass. Clear glass is fabulous in any setting, classical or modern, as it looks original and artistic without overpowering either décor or flowers. In black it is a statement piece with a stunning contemporary monochrome effect (and sells in Harrods and interior design emporia for £79 plus delivery).

It stands 60cm (2ft) tall, perfect for large arrangements, and arrives boxed for presentation as a gift (please let us know if you would like a gift card and gift wrapping). Hand-blown black glass: Code FT01LS01. RRP £75. CCUK £57. Order Fiord Vase in black. Hand-blown clear glass: Code FT02LS01. RRP £66. CCUK £49. Order Fiord Vase in clear.

Sophisticated Spring knit by The Alpaca Collection

Alpaca CollectionThis is the most difficult time of year to decide which jacket to wear. Too warm for a coat? Too cool to go without? This sophisticated alpaca knit from The Alpaca Collection is called a cardigan but the style is smart enough for you to wear it as a jacket. And we think it will become the one you reach for all the time.

Not only does it look stylish, it is so versatile. Its elegant line means you can dress it up, as here, but it will not look out of place outdoors or indoors, any time of day or year, with a dress or separates.

Because alpaca is such a fine fibre, it has a gorgeous soft, supple feel and does not ‘pill’, so it will look marvellous for years. As to performance, it has exceptional insulating qualities, wicking, and breathability—which will help to give you temperature control all year round.

Named the Angelica, it comes in many different colours: Navy, black, silver (pictured), ivory, denim, red, fuchsia, heather and teal. Sizes are 8 to 18. Code AC08AC03. RRP £185. CCUK £119. Order Angelique Cardigan from The Alpaca Collection.

Christys' & Co famous folding Panama hat

Panama

With game fairs, country shows and holidays in the offing, now is the time to make sure your Panama hat is up to scratch. The proper Panama hat is the one that folds without damage. The quality is determined by the fineness and evenness of its weave, and the strength and colour of the straw.

To make sure Members have the best, our Club hatmaker is Christys’ & Co, the world’s oldest milliner, who still hand-make every hat in the traditional manner. Christys’ Panama hats are hand-made from the original Ecuadorian hoods. They also take longer to produce and prices usually reflect this.

Through the Club, however, Members enjoy a more advantageous price. Sizes 54-63cm. Code PH03CC02. RRP £55. CCUK £41. Order.

Christys' & Co top hats for the Summer Season

Top Hat

This is also the season for top hats. Weddings, May Balls, the Epsom Derby, Royal Ascot, Buckingham Palace Garden Parties—they are all upon us. If your top hat is a family heirloom that still fits, good for you. If not, and if you want an heirloom in the making, Christys’ & Co is the one to have—and through the Club you won't need a second mortgage to own this piece of English history and craftsmanship.

Christys’ was founded in 1773 by Miller Christy, 24 years before the first top hat was thought of. Having perfected the art of making proper fur top hats at the outset—they were beaver then, now hare or rabbit—Christy passed his skills to the next generation and now, 236 years later, to be wearing a luxurious handmade Christys’ of London hat is to wear a classic, an original, as worn by an 18th-century gentleman, ready to be handed down to your own son and heir.

The black melusine fur felt is always correct: choose the more modern shorter crown (5 1/4in), handmade in traditional fur, with black grosgrain hatband and the resplendent Christys’ gold, red and blue emblem in the lining. Sizes 6 5/8in to 7 3/4in. Code TH08CC02. RRP £284. CCUK £159. Order Christys' Melusine Top Hat.

Top Hat

Or choose Christys' classic Ascot Top Hat in grey fur felt with a 5 1/4in crown. Sizes: 6 5/8in to 7 3/4in. Code TH10CC02. RRP £105. CCUK £79. Order Christys' Ascot Top Hat.

The celebrated Club Claret—now in magnum

The Club claret is a favourite with Members. It is ready to drink now, has the class and pedigree of a French classic, is made by a rising star in Bordeaux winemakers, yet at £7.75 a bottle it is half the price it should be.

The wine is from the heart of the Premieres Côtes de Bordeaux. It oozes quality and is highly recommended by Master of Wine Derek Smedley, co-chairman of the International Wine Challenge and a member of the Club Tasting Panel. He scores it 92 points (out of 100), and therefore a Silver Medallist.

It also happens to be the House Claret at the Garrick Club. Case of 12 bottles. Code CC01EP01. Non-Members £195. CCUK £98. Order 12 bottle case.

STOP PRESS
Magnums of the Club Claret have now landed in bond, so we can offer them to our Members at £18.75 each. Cases of 6 magnums. Code CC04EP01. CCUK £113. Order Six-magnum case.

Calvisius Fresh Malossol Caviar, from only £69

Caviar

Members are really enjoying Calvisius Caviar, our alternative to wild Caspian Sea caviar, particularly at this super price (a 50g pot is £69!). Connoisseurs call it 'excellent'.

With its large, 3mm dark to light brown eggs, the caviar is fresh, not pasteurised, and neither too oily nor bitter nor bland. It has the ‘pop’, the glistening grey colour and the buttery, nutty flavour of wild caviar. It is not Beluga: even the cleverest fish farmers have yet to succeed in rearing Beluga to maturity in captivity. But it has outdone some wild caviar in blind test conditions.

Calvisius is ‘malossol caviar’, which means ‘with little salt’. Code WC02WH01. 50g RRP £135. CCUK £69. Order. Code WS05WH01. Two 50g pots. RRP £260. CCUK £129. Order. Code WS12WH01. RRP £336. CCUK £195. Order.
