Dear CountryClubuk Member,

The finest view of Henley Royal Regatta for Members

The English Season, like the music of Vivaldi, is dazzling, intricate and popular. This spectacular round of parties and sport naturally includes Henley—and this year our Members are invited to watch the rowing, drink Pimm’s and Champagne, and dine on summer delicacies, in a private box in civilized splendour in the Grandstand Pavilion at the Phyllis Club, directly on the Finish line of the world’s most famous rowing regatta.

Henley is the perennial English river party, an extravaganza of giant young rowers, blue-and-white marquees, gentlemen wearing stripey blazers and boaters, and ladies in their summer dresses. At the Phyllis Club you will have a reserved car parking space and enjoy some of the real pleasures of an English summer, from a Champagne and Pimm’s reception to a three-course luncheon, served with wines. Afternoon tea will also be served—and a complimentary bar will be open all day.

Our Club party will take place on Saturday, July 4, Semi-Finals Day. The day starts at 11am and finishes at 7pm, with 44 races in the day. This will be a truly memorable event. To book your places—which cost £189 plus VAT for a day’s hospitality usually valued at £243 plus VAT—click here or call Member Services on 020 7291 8600.

Finest fur top hats from famous Christys’ of London

This is the season for top hats. Weddings, Buckingham Palace Garden Parties, May Balls, the Epsom Derby, Royal Ascot—they are all upon us. If your top hat is a family heirloom that still fits, good for you. If not, and if you want an heirloom in the making, Christys’ of London, the world’s oldest milliner, is the one to have—and through the Club you can claim this piece of English history and craftsmanship at a much lower price.

Christys’ was founded in 1773 by Miller Christy, 24 years before the first top hat was worn. It caused panic on the streets of London. Nobody had seen anything like it: ladies fainted, dogs barked, horses shied, somebody broke an arm, and the hat’s wearer, John Heatherington, was fined £50—a small fortune at the time—for disturbing the peace.

Having perfected the art of making proper fur top hats at the outset—they were beaver then, now hare or rabbit—Christy passed his skills to the next generation and now, 236 years later, to be wearing a luxurious handmade Christys’ of London hat is to wear a classic, an original, as worn by an 18th-century gentleman, ready to be handed down to your son and heir, as the best top hats always are.

We have all Christys’ of London top hat styles. The black melusine fur felt (above) is always correct: choose either the traditional tall crown (6 1/4 in) or the more modern shorter crown (5 1/4in).

Many opt for grey nowadays, and the Christys’ Fur Ascot Grey (right) has a 5 1/4in crown. All are handmade in traditional fur, with a black grosgrain hatband, and are beautifully lined in silk with a leather hatband and the resplendent Christys’ of London gold, red and blue emblem in the top of the lining.

Hardy top-notch EWS windproof fleece, save £20

The name of Hardy is supreme in fishing equipment. Since their founding in 1872, they have invented and produced the classics of sporting tackle to the highest specification—and their eye for detail is focused on everything they make, from rods to reels, fly lines to waders—even a fleece jacket such as this.

The Hardy EWS Windproof Fleece Jacket uses fleece bonded to a mesh layer that blocks wind while holding in the heat yet avoiding overheating—a clever technique. This combination also reduces bulk, giving a more flattering appearance. If you are out early on a cold riverbank or covert side, even in spring, you will know the value of a good windproof fleece.

This one is a very smart two-tone green half-zip jacket with two fleece-lined zipped pockets in just the right position at the front, and the adjustable collar top has a cord-lock to cut out wind chill. Sizes S, M, L, XL, XXL Code FT01HH03. RRP £59. CCUK £39. Save £20. Order Hardy EWS Windproof Fleece Jacket.

Chelsea gold medal-winning garden designers’ screen

An elegant garden screen can dramatically improve an outside space. It gives privacy and shelter, a special corner in which to read a book, hides an unattractive wall, and makes an excellent backdrop for colourful plants.

This lovely screen is the Dewchurch, by Chelsea Flower Show medal-winners Ascalon Design of Hereford. It is a piece of artwork that combines scroll and hammered leaf details that curve and sweep in natural style to border a latticework centre. It has three panels, hinged to make it free-standing, and looks great alone or decorated with plants.

Ideal for garden or patio, being made of painted wrought iron, it looks delightful as a piece of furniture in the conservatory or even the house. One triple screen can stand alone; or link two or more to create a long free-standing divide. We recently saw a not dissimilar screen in a smart London garden centre, only it was selling for more than £250!

Ascalon Dewchurch Lattice Screen. Size 180cm x 138cm (70in x 54in). Code DS01AC10. RRP £170. CCUK £109. Order Screen.

¶ See also Ascalon Design’s Butler’s Tray (£54), Baker’s Rack (£85), Flower Baskets (£69 for two) and Tree Seats (from £89). Or call Member Services on 020 7291 8600 for more garden furniture.

Hand-turned, handpainted giant English Guards skittles

Skittles is an enjoyable family game for summer on the lawn—particularly when the skittles are a smart company of Guards, flotilla of jolly Jack Tars or unit of Old English Peelers.

Skittles was one of the most popular English games in the 14th century, and pictures of River Thames Frost Fairs in the 1600s also show them as a major entertainment. With this history, it is fitting that John Jaques of London, the world’s oldest games makers (since 1795) should have created a Giant Royal Guard Skittles Set in their cabinet-makers’ workshops in Edenbridge, Suffolk.

The Guards are six hand-turned, hand-painted solid hardwood skittles standing just under 1ft (290mm), modelled on the Buckingham Palace Guard, with three wooden balls. It is debatable who has most fun with them—adults or children—and they make a smart, unusual gift for either.

Code GS01JJ02. RRP £48. CCUK £39. Free UK delivery. Order John Jaques Giant Royal Guard Skittles.

To The Ritz for a Bollinger Champagne Gala Dinner!

The Ritz Champagne Gala Dinners are now celebrated occasions in the London calendar. They were created to mark the 100th anniversary of The Ritz in London, and we are delighted to have reserved places for CountryClubuk Members at the Bollinger Champagne Dinner on Thursday, June 25.

This glittering occasion will start with a Bollinger Champagne and canapé reception in the 18th-century William Kent House at The Ritz. It will be followed by a five-course gastronomic menu created by the Ritz Executive Chef, John Williams, matching each course to one of the Champagne House’s finest offerings—a truly gastronomic experience which includes both the Bollinger La Grande Annee 2000 and the 1999. Our host will be Bollinger Ambassador Christian Dennis.

As a CountryClubuk Member you pay the exclusive price of £140 per person (including VAT), instead of the full £160. The occasion offers a superb chance to explore the depth and range of styles of this great Champagne. We have reserved places for our Members, but numbers are necessarily limited so please make your reservations by calling Member Services on 020 7291 8600.

Extra perks, better rates at London’s Grange Hotels

As part of our programme to enhance our hotel booking service we have arranged with Grange Hotels to notify us of late availability for rooms, at even better rates than even our usual discounted rates. Please call Member Services on 020 7291 8600 at any time to check these last-minute rates —even up to 7pm or later.

Grange Hotels have been popular with our Members for many years. They range from the five-star Grange City across the road from The Tower of London, with its luxury pool, gym and fitness facility, to the quiet three-star Grange Rochester in leafy Vincent Square near the Houses of Parliament. Sharing its garden with the British Museum is the four-star Grange White Hall, where you can breakfast or dine in the conservatory, with Blooms next door and, in nearby Bloomsbury, Grange Beauchamp.

At each hotel, our Members can enjoy full English breakfast instead of the usual Continental, and make use of free internet access. And, just in time for summer, you will now receive a free glass of house wine, or a beer or soft drink, to quench your thirst and welcome you.

As an example of the Club rates, when Grange Beauchamp are charging £200 per night excluding VAT and breakfast, our Club rate is £135 for two, including VAT, English breakfast and of course that welcome drink. At the five-star Grange Holborn, when others pay £220 without VAT or breakfast, we pay £150 all-inclusive.

To check out the best possible rates at Grange Hotels, and all others in London— from The Ritz and The Dorchester to a small hidden gem in Kensington—call Member Services on 020 7291 8600 or email your requirements to hotels@countryclubuk.com

Salmon fishing on the famous Cork Blackwater

Fishing for salmon in Southern Ireland is a great experience: wild fish, wonderful scenery, hospitable people, and of course the craic. The Cork Blackwater is the most renowned salmon fishery in Ireland, and we have arranged with Ian Powell, owner of the famous Blackwater Lodge, to offer Members special Club rates for fishing there this season.

Blackwater Lodge, set in the peaceful valley overlooking the river, has provided sublime salmon fishing and hospitality for more than 30 years, and now the drift-nets have been lifted the salmon runs are again superb. Last season, three all-time records fell.
