Nigel Mendham is the Michelin Star-winning chef at Thirty Six, destination restaurant at the five-star Duke’s Hotel in the heart of London’s St James’s. Mendham won a Michelin star at The Samling in Cumbria, and has brought creativity underpinned by sound British cooking to the menus in the elegant, comfortable, club-style dining room at Duke’s Hotel, with its glinting silver cutlery, starched white tablecloths and subtle colour schemes.
Mendham’s menus showcase seasonal ingredients and some of his renowned creations—from his starters of goat cheese flan served with beetroot and a celery sorbet to the white crab, avocado and pink grapefruit and mains of cauliflower, coriander and almonds served with fresh wild turbot or Yorkshire venison, celeriac, barley pearls and black pudding. His food is not only delicious it is also easy to choose healthy options.
The lunch menu—which might include such delicious creations as that goat cheese flan with celery sorbet, or scallops or langoustine served with pickled vegetables and Granny Smith apple, followed by beef cheek or South Coast skate and a selection of mouth-watering puddings (such as Victoria plum with ginger and iced yoghurt, or dark chocolate pavé, pumpkin and hazelnut praline)—is excellent value at £25 for two courses (£21.25 to Club Members, plus a glass of Champagne), or £32 for three including tea or coffee (£30.60 to Members). An early dinner menu (served from 6pm-7pm) is currently £31 for two courses and £36 for three, both with a glass of wine (with of course your advantageous price and complimentary glass of Champagne). The seven-course tasting menu is £75 (£63.75 to Members), or £105 including matching wines by the glass (£89.25 to Members).
The wine list is good and extensive, with plenty of enjoyable wines by the glass so you can easily match your food (these start at £6.50 for a Manzanilla, running to a St Emilion Grand Cru at £15.50 and Perrier-Jouet Champagne at £15). A bottle of Picpoul or Sauvignon Blanc is £25, a South of France Merlot is £30 and a delicious Argentinian Malbec is £38.
