With its awe-inspiring mediaeval architecture and fine Andalusían cuisine, music and flamenco, the Spanish city of Córdoba promises a rich cultural extravaganza: and our hand-picked hotel is all part of the experience

There is something special about Córdoba, in Andalucía. It is a beautiful mediaeval city—and one of the easiest cities in which to explore Spain’s rich heritage of Arabic, Roman and Christian culture, architecture, gourmet food, guitar music and flamenco. At one time a bustling Roman metropolis, jewel in the crown of Arabic Andalucía, and cultural custodian during the Dark Ages, by the 9th century Córdoba was the largest and richest city in Europe. With a million inhabitants—who walked paved streets already lit at night—Córdoba had a tradition of learning and discourse that overshadowed even Baghdad, then heart of the Byzantine Empire.

Today this heritage is evident as you wander through the narrow cobbled streets and bask in the Mediterranean warmth: if you enjoy heat and want to make sure you have some this year, Córdoba is certainly the place to go. And many people say the sights of Córdoba outrank even those of Granada.

At the heart of things stands the vast Mezquita, the Great Mosque, a pearl among mosques with its indoor forest of 850 marble, jasper and granite columns and beautiful gardens; here you can truly understand Córdoba—but there is so much more: visit the synagogue and the ruins of Medina Azahara (the Caliph's palace complex); and the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos, the Christian monarchs' storybook fortress with crenellated parapets and turrets, gardens with rills of water flowing into stone tanks, and shady nooks, refuge from the heat; discover what is left of the Romans—including the much-repaired bridge over the Guadalquivir River—who dominate the Archaeological Museum.

There are smaller museums too, with jasmine-scented courtyards and not a tourist in sight. And to appreciate the duende, or soul, of Andalucía, take in the paintings of Julio Romero de Torres in all their kitschy, kinky glory, in a museum devoted to the artist. And do not forget Plaza del Potro, or the inn where Cervantes stayed while writing Don Quixote.

Córdoba is indeed one of the cultural capitals of Spain, a world heritage site, but even more than these, it is an old Andalucían city, its nightlife teeming with music and flamenco, tapas and Montilla and el paseo, the evening promenade, the women in their bright flamenco dresses. Some of Spain's flamenco legends were born here, including Paco Peña and Joaquín Cortés.

The Andalucían horse was also born here, and a Royal Stables remains, its equine stars featuring in shows of flamenco and dressage. On summer nights, when the heat of the day begins to cool, Spaniards and tourists wander through the squares, eating tapas and drinking in the bars, listening to the thrum of flamenco guitars lilting out of doorways, and enjoying the warm Andalucían night.

For all who enjoy flamenco and music, the first fortnight in July is a wonderful time to visit, when the International Guitar Festival takes over the city in a celebration of music, from flamenco to jazz and modern, played by world-famous guitarists who in times past have included Paco de Lucía, Paco Serrano (flamenco), Carlos Santana, B B King and Mike Stern (jazz and modern guitar), Pepe Romero, Elliot Fisk and Leo Brouwer (classical guitar). Other good times to visit include spring, when the religious festivals take over the town, and autumn, when the city is still warm and mellow after the full-on heat of summer.

If you enjoy good food, this is a fabulous place. Amid the Moorish ruins and geranium-filled courtyards, Córdoban women still grind freshly-peeled garlic and almonds with a wooden pestle and mortar. When you walk along the cobbled streets, the air is heavy with the aroma of the local olive oil, and specialities include the famous Jamón ibérico, meltingly delicious, produced from pigs which roam in the oak forests above the city. The restaurants are good, and inexpensive.

This is a city, and a region, which our Members very much enjoy, and we have arranged special Club rates at a delightful hotel, the four-star Las Casas de la Judería, 'a refuge of peace and beauty', according to one of our recent guests. The location is superb—at the heart of the historic centre, only yards from the Alcazar and the Mezquita, and not far from the Guadalquivir River.

It stands in a narrow lane in the historic Jewish quarter, within strolling distance of the famous sites. Here, in cobbled alleyways almost too narrow for cars, stand whitewashed houses, their roofs covered with the crescent tiles that keep homes cool beneath the Mediterranean sun, their doorways and arches offering glimpses of gorgeous patios and courtyards filled with fountains, vases brimming with bougainvillea, geraniums and slender trees; always cool and inviting.

Las Casas de la Judería is an authentic, inviting Andalucían-style collection of historic houses and their Moorish-style courtyards, filled with flowers and fountains—and, in one, the hotel swimming pool, beautifully set against stone arches. The large reception rooms are open for cool relaxation, and the many patios with tumbling bougainvillea are perfect places to relax with a drink and a book.

The rooms are large, with king-size beds and en-suite bathrooms, some with Jacuzzis—the superior rooms, with their Andalucian architecture and magnificent decorated ceilings, are comfortable and authentic. Everywhere the service is friendly, the staff charming and efficient—and last year the hotel won a Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence.
